Bronwyn Carter

It’s already been
I’m already there
in the rain
in the tree
black trunk behind me.

Sunday already
The Church has played
to the tumultuous masses
that’s what he said to us.

And in an unguarded moment
I was drawn right out
though he looked at me
and did a thing with his mouth
as if to say: I know that gaze,
I’m wondering tonight
who I’ll take back stage.

Made me feel like dying
in an unguarded moment.

Beside the wall the flowers grow
And down the sticky stems I go
Watching changing skies below
Your arms so far away.

Who can say what we ever really need
It’s already been.
